Getting an HGV driving job can be a job in itself!
Passing your HGV test means more job opportunities and potentially better earnings for you and your family. Finding the driving job best suited to you is fundamental in getting your career of to the right start. So, look around and do your research.
For example if you just paid £2,500 to get your class one HGV licence, do you really want to drive a 3.5 tonner for Acardo? (no offence to Acardo meant!)
Researching the current driving job market properly will pay dividends in the long run. Some haulage companies and driver agencies may want “previous driving” experience, which, if you are new to the industry can be difficult. We advice you write an up to date CV specifying any driving job experience. Remember any driving job experience will help so include any car, 3.5 tonnes, 7.5 tonne experience etc. State how long you have had a car licence, if it’s clean and why you are so keen to get a driving job (family tradition, always had an ambition etc.).
With the emergence of the internet, sourcing and applying for HGV driver jobs has never been easier. Most HGV driving jobs are advertised on the net anyway. It’s a numbers game too, so keep at it. The more agencies you register with and the more driving jobs you apply for the more chances you have in getting the driving job you want. Some new drivers elect to work for driving agencies initially to gain experience and skills whilst others prefer permanent employment. Each option has its own merits. For example. Woking for an agency gives you flexibility. Whereas permanent employment give better job security.
Most conscientious employers and agencies will require you to undergo a driving assessment at interview stage. This is to help determine your skills and knowledge as a driver. Make sure you take both parts of your driving licence with you on an interview (and Driver CPC card). Driving experience is always useful but having the right aptitude and aptitude is by far the most important factor.
Recent surveys have shown a marked increase in driving job vacancies. Although we are still in a recession goods still need to be delivered. Those who say there is a huge shortage of drivers (80,000 according to certain websites) should be treated with a large dose of scepticism. The reality is this.
