LGV Theory Test

Before you can take any LGV practical test (Modules 3 and 4 of the Initial driver CPC) you must pass the appropriate LGV theory test(s).

How many theory tests you need to sit and pass will depend on whether you need want to drive LGV's for a living or just for your own personal use (i.e. you own a horse which you need to transport to events at the weekend and you are not being paid to do so). If your intention is to be paid to drive an LGV then you have to get through 3 separate theory tests, including:

  1. The DSA multi-choice theory tests: Consists of 100 questions based on large vehicles (covers drivers hours, digital tachograpghs, HGV weights and dimensions, different speeds for HGV's on different roads, ADR, bridge and tunnel heights etc.)
  2. The Hazard Perception theory test: Very similar, in fact exactly the same as the car Hazard Perception test, only longer. You will be shown a number of driving simulation clips and you have to spot potential hazards as soon as you see them. As soon as you see the hazard, click the mouse or tap the space bar on the keyboard. The sooner you click to confirm you have seen the hazard the more points you are awarded. Note. Clicking the mouse button repetitively will be deemed as cheating and you will score no marks for that clip.
  3. Driver CPC Module 2 Case Study (NEW)

This theory test came into force September 10th 2009 (LGV's) and is the theory element of the Initial Driver CPC qualification. The DSA will present you with a total of 7 case studies. The case studies are supposed to reflect situations a professional Driver will experience in his working life. The case studies/scenarios will be illustrated using text, pictures, audio, video and diagrams. For each case study you will be asked 7-8 multiple choice questions.

If you are not intending to drive an HGV professionally then you only need pass the multi-choice and Hazard Perception. The Driver CPC Module 2 Case study is not need.

A few things to remember on the multi choice and case study exams:

Theory tests must be sat at a DSA approved Theory Test Centre. There are literally hundreds around the country so you should not have too far to travel.
