HGV Licence - How To Get A Licence To Drive Lorries
If you want a career as an HGV Driver, you will first need to obtain a licence. This simple guide shows you the steps required to obtain proper HGV training and the current requirements for passing your HGV driving test.
There are 5 steps to attaining your HGV licence, this includes the initial Driver CPC. Each step must be completed in sequence, as described below. The whole process from start to finish should take 8-10 weeks. The HGV licence process can seem daunting, but don't worry as most reputable HGV training companies will manage everything for you from medical to your final practical test. For more information we advise you contact an HGV training provider in your area.
Step 1 - Medical
You must pass a medical to prove you are physically fit to drive a truck. You can do this through your own Doctor who must complete the D4 form, but bear in mind that this can cost anything up to £140.00. Speak to your local provider or contact Cotswold Medicals who are affordable (£52.00) and have medical centres around the UK
Step 2 - Provisional Licence Application
Apply for the correct LGV provisional entitlement using the D2 form. Most new entrants will apply for provisional category C. Make sure you get this bit right. C is for over 7.5 tonnes, C1 is for up to 7.5 tonnes and C1+E is 7.5 tonnes with trailer.
Post the required forms (D2, D4 and both parts of licence) to the DVLA in the brown pre-addressed envelope. Alternatively, forward the application to your local provider 1st who will check that everything is correct and in order before forwarding on to the DVLA.
While waiting for your licence to return it is highly advisable you start studying for your 3 theory tests. visit our online training simulator for assistance.
Step 3 - Theory Tests (Driver CPC Module 1 & 2)
Once you receive your provisional licence back from DVLA contact your local provider who will book modules 1 and 2 of your theory tests. They will arrange for all 3 to be sat on the same day at a local DSA theory test centre.

Step 5 - Module 4 (Practical Test Associated Knowledge)
Test will be taken at DSA practical test centre. You will need a vehicle for this to demonstrate and explain your answers; it's all about what a professional truck driver does whilst not driving. For example: securing loads, carrying out pre-use checks, dealing with emergency situations, checking the vehicle for illegal immigrants and contraband etc. If preferred you can take the Module 4 test before the module 3 test. We advice you receive adequate training to help prepare you sufficiently. Contact your local training provider for further details. Test duration 20-30 minutes.
