Last night’s Chanel 4 programme entitled Mothertruckers featured a number of would be female LGV drivers embarking on a professional driving career.
The program followed a group of ladies who underwent LGV instruction with Lincolnshire based Priestley LGV training. They were instructed by Wendy A.K.A. “Mothertrucker” on a variety of HGV’s including category C and C+E.
One of the ladies featured in the program started driving a truck at the age of 17. Lucie Stubbs was able to do this by joining the Young Driver Scheme. She was trained by Stoke on Trent based, HGV LGV network members Transed Training .
Whilst the program was aired (10 pm) www.hgvlgvtraining.co.uk saw a huge increase in visitor numbers. As a result over 2,200 visitor hits were recorded on this day alone. That’s more than double the normal number of daily visits www.hgvlgvtraining.co.uk receives.
It’s great to see a program like “Mothertruckers” on terrestrial television as it will hopefully encourage the fairer of the sex to enter the commercial transport industry. It’s a fact less than 2% of all lorry drivers are women. If more ladies took the plunge and became professional lorry drivers then the (perceived) driver shortage of 30,000 vacancies would be tackled overnight.
It’s true to say the LGV driver industry is a male dominated industry. But it should not be that way. Modern trucks are technological marvels and suited to both male and female drivers alike. Employers and agencies welcome lady LGV drivers so don’t let not getting a start put you off.
