HGV Operator CPC exam changes from 2012

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

redyellowAn Operator’s licence is required if you wish to operate a goods vehicle over 3.5 tonnes GVW for the carriage of goods in connection with a trade or business. One of the main criteria for the granting of a standard Operators license is having the required professional competence, i.e. the relevant CPC qualification.

How you attain the CPC (Certificate in Professional Competence) qualification (in road transport) has changed. It still remains the case that you will need to demonstrate knowledge (and application) by passing a number of exams to be awarded a CPC.

After 2nd December 2011 it will no longer be possible to attain just a national CPC qualification. The National and International CPC examination will become one combined award.

OCR’s (CPC examination awarding body) new CPCs in Road Haulage and Passenger Transport will both consist of a single multiple choice assessment and a single case study assessment. Both elements will test national and international knowledge/application. So, to achieve a new International CPC, candidates will only need to take two units.

The 2 exam units will be in a multi choice and case study format. To be awarded a CPC qualification students must pass both the following:

Multiple choice
The multiple choice assessment will be available from March 2012 (2nd March 2012.) The multiple choice element will be a timetabled assessment consisting of 60 multiple choice questions (and thus 60 marks.)

In order to pass this unit, candidates must achieve a score of at least 70% (at least 42 out of 60) across the paper. The exam duration is 2 hours. This paper will test knowledge of both national and international elements of the syllabus.

Case study
The new case study assessment will no longer be preceded by a pre-release scenario. Instead, a shorter, more relevant scenario will be issued with the papers at the start of the two hour assessment. This shorter case study will contain no distractions and will only contain information which will enable the candidates to demonstrate application of the knowledge they have acquired.

An additional improvement to the case study is that it will now only assess the core areas. The case study exam will focus on the application of knowledge, making candidates more adept at in the skills required in relevant transport careers and benefitting the transport industry in general by encouraging more relevantly qualified transport managers.

Another big change to the case study exam is that candidates will now be able to take any notes or books of their choice in to the case study assessment and questions will test application of knowledge only. The case study exam will be 2 hours in duration and must be sat at an OCR approved examination centre. Students will be asked 5-8 questions and must achieve a pass mark of at least 50%.

International CPC.
It will still be possible for national CPC holders (must have gained national CPC after 1.1.200 and before 4/12/2011) to attain the international CPC qualification only (for at least 12 months after new changes are implemented.)

Examination syllabus
The National and International Freight Syllabus covers the following subjects: Civil law, Commercial law, Social law, Fiscal law, Business and financial management of the undertaking, Access to the market, Technical standards and technical aspects of operation and Road safety

The OCR, CPC exam dates for 2012 are 2nd March and 1st June, 14th September and 7th December. The cut of point for CPC exam entry is approximately 3 weeks before test dates. There are a number of training options available to help you prepare adequately for the CPC exams, including classroom, home study and online tuition.

Letchworch HGV training company becomes DSA approved customer site

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

KMLhgvlgvtraining Network members, Herts. Roadtraining in Letchworth, a Driving Standards Agency (DSA) approved LGV training school, has become the first training company in Hertfordshire to be awarded “DSA customer site” status.

This means that any potential LGV or PCV driver will no longer have to travel to Enfield in North London, Peterborough or Leighton Buzzard to train and sit their practical tests. This includes the module 4 part of the initial Drivers CPC.

Training can now be done in the local area through Herts. Roadtrain, with tests undertaken at their own premises in Works Rd, Letchworth Garden City.

John, Michelle and Paul at Herts. Roadtrain are thrilled at getting approval as it has taken many months of hard work and a considerable amount of investment on their behalf to be able to achieve this position.

Herts. Roadtrain and the DSA, working together can now provide a greatly improved service to the local population. With skyrocketing fuel costs and the emphasis on companies to reduce their carbon footprint, the new site will go a long way to optimising training time and reducing the current environmental impact.

In addition to all of the above, Drivers CPC periodic training modules are available at their excellent in-house training facility. With the cut off date of 2014 this will become critical in the coming months.

Practical tests and training in the local area are due to start in mid December 2011. For more information please call Michelle on 01462 680 100 or visit their website

Fears Over 2014 Driver CPC Training Rules

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

dcdpThe year 2014 has significant implications for lorry drivers as new rules will be introduced the will make it a legal condition that all driver complete a Driver Certification of Professional Competence (Driver CPC.) There are growing concerns that a significant number of drivers are failing to complete the mandatory training and this will have huge implications for the industry when we reach 2014.

The 2009 EU ruling appears to have not hit home with drivers and experts in the training industry have also voiced their concersn as 2014 looms. Sean Pargeter, Training Director of EP Training in Surrey commented, ‘The fact that we are a little over 2 years away from this law coming into force doesn’t seem to have reached a worrying number of drivers’.

The Freight Transport Association have analysed the data and concluded that there is a staggering 46% shortfall in the number of drivers who have taken the test. James Hookham from the Freight Transport Association (FTA) says “this could cause problems in supply chains”.

New BBC series to expose dodgy HGV training brokers

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

bbcYou’ve Been Scammed is a new BBC One series that highlights common scams that take place every day in the UK. On the 21st November (BBC1 at 9.15 am) “You’ve Been Scammed” looks into the plight of literally 1,000’s of people who have been ripped off by dodgy HGV training brokers.

The series is presented by Matthew Alright (famous for Rogue Traders and Watchdog.)

The first step involved in the HGV career ladder is obtaining an HGV driving licence and this is where the rip off tends to happen. The program explains that dodgy HGV training brokers are NOT real HGV training companies and that dodgy training brokers give the overwhelming impression they are a national provider with training centres all around the UK.

Customers are often misinformed, mislead and miss sold, parting with up to £3,000 a time. Dodgy brokers will promise the world yet deliver next to nothing leaving unexpected and well intentioned customers out of pocket and without training.

We sincerely hope the program will educate and inform as many people as possible about the hazards of using a broker and the benefits of going direct to a reputable training provider. We also hope it will encourage rather than deter any new entrants out there who are considering a career as an LGV driver.

www.hgvlgvtraining.co.uk was created specifically to allow people to go direct to quality local HGV training providers in their area and avoid getting ripped off by rogue HGV training brokers.

We do not and will not promote HGV training brokers.
