Initial Driver CP Training

Driver CPC Modules 2 and 4 were introduced (LGV industry) on September 2009 and applies to categories C1, C1E and C.

Module 2 and 4’s objectives are to ensure new entrants have the required skills and knowledge to carry out the duties of a professional LGV driver.

Some new entrants are exempt from needing to pass/acquire modules 2 and 4 (initial driver CPC qualification.)

The general rule is however if you intend to driver a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight (G.V.W.) professionally then you will need Initial Driver CPC (modules 1,2,3 & 4.)

Before Initial Driver CPC (pre 1/9/2009) new entrants had to only pass 2 theory tests and a driving tests. These elements still exist and make up modules 1 and 3 of Initial Driver CPC.

Module 2
Module 2 is a theory test examination which, like Module 1 (multi choice and hazard perception), must be sat at a DSA theory test centre. Students will be asked questions based on a number of case studies. The case studies are designed to replicate situations a professional LGV driver may encounter in his or her working environment.

Each case study will be illustrated using photos, video clips, text, diagrams and audio. Students will be asked approximately 7 questions each from a total of 7 case studies. (approx 49 in.)
Module theory tests can be booked online with The D.S.A.,calling 0300 200 122, or speak to your local training provider.

Suitable preparation is highly recommended. You can visit our online training simulator to practice via the internet.

Module 4
Module 4 is the practical associated knowledge exam. The DSA examiner will ask 5-6 questions based on scenarios covering the following sections
1, Demonstrate how to load a vehicle with due regard for safety rules and proper vehicle use.
2, Show that you know how to secure the vehicle and its contents
3, Demonstrate an ability to prevent criminality and trafficking in illegal immigrants.
4, Demonstrate an ability to assess emergency situations.
5, Demonstrate an ability to prevent physical risk.

Students will need to demonstrate their answers using a suitable vehicle LGV. Although module 4 is a practical test no driving is required (except rolling brake check.) To be awarded a pass students must attain at least 80% overall and at least 75% in all 5 subject areas.

Cost of the test is £55. The £55 test fee will also pay for your Initial Driver CPC qualification card.

Please visit our Module 4 training page for more info.

Worth Knowing.
You will not need to pass Modules 2 & 4 if you already posses cat C1 entitlement (if you passed your car test before 1st Jan 1997 or passed an LGV cat C1 practical test).

You will not need to pass Modules 2 & 4 if it is not your intention to drive professionally. Please check our exemptions page for more information.

You can drive an LGV professionally as soon as you have passed all 4 modules of the Initial Driver CPC test. You do not need to wait for your qualification card 1st.

You will need your module 2 certificate (and both parts of your driving licence) to take the module 4 test.
