Worth knowing
You can pass module 1 and 3 before modules 2 and 4 (pass the theory, hazard perception and practical driving test before passing the theory case study and practical associated knowledge exam)
You cannot drive professionally until you have passed all 4 Driver CPC tests.
If you already have C1, (passed you car test before 1/1/1997 or passed the C1 theory and practical test) then you only need to pass modules 1&3
Module 4
Practical associated knowledge exam. No driving is required for this one. It’s all about your HGV Driving Job, while not driving.
A thirty minute test carried out at a DSA test centre. You will need a vehicle to demonstrate your answers. You will be asked a number of questions (approximately 6) based on the following topics:
Vehicle pre-use Check: Legal requirements for professional drivers.
Check for illegal immigrants: Practical demonstration on how you would check for illegal immigrants on your vehicle.
Check for contraband: As above, but also checking smaller areas of the vehicle.
Simulate securing loads: Various load restraining devices are needed to ensure loads are secure and safe. Some of these devises include: webbing, strapping, metal chains, ropes and load tensioning bars. You must show how these devises are used. The DSA have a trolley you can use.
Vehicle & load security: explain and show the important factors of vehicle and load security. HGV/LGV’s transport goods that may be dangerous (petrol tankers) or of high value (computers, mobile phones etc).
Vehicle and load security is an important part of the professional drivers’ duties.
How you would deal with an emergency situation: For example the DSA examiner may say to you. “You are driving along a busy road and you notice in your side view mirror your rear tyre is on fire, how would you deal with this situation?” Check mirrors initially, pull over on the hard shoulder, switch off engine, hazard lights on, apply handbrake and neutral, and exit if possible by the n/s, checking your n/s mirror and blind spot before exiting facing the cab. Assess the fire and if possible extinguish with a powder fire extinguisher. Keep others away etc.
The pass mark for module 4 is 80%. However you must attain at least 75% in each section (6 sections). Test fee is £55. On completion on passing module 4, you will be awarded a DCPCQC (Driver CPC qualification card). This card is valid for 5 years and entitles you to drive professionally. Your independent LGV training provider can assist you in all matters regarding Driver CPC.
